For the first time in Germany the exhibition shows the installation “China Girl” of Swedish artist Maria Ängquist Klyvare.

Consisting of different parts (sculpture, photography, video) the work deals with the dramatic situation of girls in China.

What the artist have to say on this:
„50 million women are “missing” in China. Thousands of small girls disappear every day. They are not wanted and are removed by abortion, murder and neglect.

I react when the innermost part of me is touched. When my right to exist is questioned. When everything I believe in is put into question. I am a woman, somebody’s daughter. I am the mother of a daughter. I am she, she is I.

This insight into the situation of girls and women in China was so deeply painful that the only choices I had were repression, sorrow or anger. Sorrow and anger were to be the catalyst and the creative fuel to start this project. A project that I now see growing joyfully with other committed people.

As the world shrinks and Sweden’s trade with China increases, the China Girl project wants to highlight the invisible victims of this tragedy. A tragedy that, partly due to new fetal diagnostic methods, is getting steadily worse.
